RevEngine Marketing to be Acquired by Digital Pi – A New Journey Begins

What a ride the past five years has been. From starting a 1-man band consulting practice to developing an awesome team with 20+ clients, the time is right to take the next step.

Today, I’m announcing that RevEngine Marketing is officially joining forces with Digital Pi.

Here’s my journey. If you want to read only the logistics, read the press release.

My Journey Begins: We No Longer Need You

On April 1, 2013, the CEO of my past company gave me the news that the marketing department was no longer needed.  And no, this wasn’t an April fool’s joke–I was being laid off through no fault of my own. I left my office that day discouraged and asking the question “What’s next?” and “How do I control my own destiny?” I had a wife and three toddlers, so I’d needed to figure out something soon. That wasn’t a good day…or was it?

As the famous saying goes, “as one door closes, another opens.” Over the next month, I began evaluating opportunities and began to see a demand for my marketing expertise in a consulting role. I immediately earned three clients (thanks Curata, Dyn and Fidelis) on my way to officially starting RevEngine Marketing.

For the next two+ years, I was booked solid and blogged like a madman. I loved working with awesome clients, but something was missing–a team to share my experiences and to bounce ideas off of.

Let’s Grow – Building the Team

Yes, RevEngine Marketing was doing well but the company was basically my own personal brand. The company couldn’t grow beyond the personal capacity I could offer which is a challenge many soloprenuers experience. Something had to change as burnout was kicking in. I’m sure this story is resonating with some of you who are consultants.

In year three, I sat down with some of my consulting advisers like David Carnes of OpFocus and Steve Baines of Forcivity. The message they gave me was…go hire. And hire I did. Wow, that was a big leap to start paying a salary and being responsible for shaping the careers of others.

Thank you Tim Cerato for taking that original leap. And Jenn DiMaria, Ande Kempf, Anna Leary, Mary Rouzer and Tyson Jurgens for believing in the vision.

Suddenly, the “I” started becoming “We” and that’s a great feeling, especially when the team starts helping clients more than you.

It’s Time to Scale – RevEngine is Acquired by Digital Pi

With 2X revenue growth each of the past two years, I put a lot of thought into how RevEngine Marketing could scale to the next level. Hire a Sales team? Bring on an accountant to send invoices? Continue recruiting awesome talent? Raise funding? Sure, all these options were possibilities but then I started talking to Ryan Vong, CEO of Digital Pi.  There is a handful of what I consider the top marketing firms that help brands with Marketo, but to me, Digital Pi sits at the top. And I’m not alone: Digital Pi was recently named Marketo partner of the year.

As we began discussing the concept of bringing the companies together, we both spent a lot of time trying to figure out why the concept wouldn’t work. Neither one of us could come up with a valid reason. The fit between the two organizations was obvious from the start–great people, great culture, great clients.

It becomes official April 30th but I couldn’t be happier to announce that RevEngine Marketing is joining the Digital Pi family. Plus, no more invoicing for me.

The Future  Looks Awesome

The joint teams bring together some of the best marketing/Marketo minds in the business. The combined organization will do what it does best—make our clients wildly successful with their marketing using Marketo.  The depth of expertise just grew to almost 50 with a full range of services around Marketo–that’s a long way from the 1-man band.

Oh yeah, I’m not going anywhere. I’m joining Digital Pi’s executive team that is already filled with the all-star talents of Ryan Vong, Tom Grubb, Bill Lundy and Ari Milstein.

And the content? For those of you who follow this blog regularly, thank you for all your support. The look and feel will change as we evaluate branding options but you’ll see even more actionable (and fun) marketing content in the coming the year.

The future looks bright and I can’t wait for it all to get started.

PS: If you are interested in joining us for the next part of the journey, we’re hiring. Send me a note.
